Acupuncture is a natural health modality that dates back over 2500 years. It forms part of a holistic health care model known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture is registered as a profession within the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is often utilised as an allied health treatment for many health complaints.
Acupuncture involves the use of sterile, very fine needles. These are used to gently stimulate acupuncture points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi (life force). A recent systematic review of the research shows strong supporting evidence for acupuncture’s use in certain conditions, and demonstrates its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. TCM takes a holistic view to illness, and treatment is individualised based on the patient’s presenting symptoms, health history and constitution. During an acupuncture treatment, some other TCM therapies may be used. These include cupping, moxibustion, gua sha and acupressure.
All practitioners using the title acupuncturist are required to hold a four-year bachelor degree in Health Sciences and be registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA).
